Let's see if this works . . . otherwise I'll have to convert to something else -- a 360x240 gif is 9 megs .. . versus the 700k video file.
This is my other Weaponry Guild Contest Entry -- much closer to the Futuristic category. Being a gun, I'm a bit more comfortable with this one.
Anyways, the idea behind this is kind of convoluted, but the sum is that I saw a concept of a plasma weapon that would start out pistol sized and then combine into something the size of the bazooka.
I didn't particularly like the design, but thought that the concept was possible (although I miss-read the combining part). So, I set about trying to figure out a way for a small gun the size of a SMG like a P90 would fold out and extend to rocket launcher scale.
I sketched out a basic layout and then brought it into Maya where a lot of the rear stock was re-thought out.
After blocking out the layout of the moving parts, I started adding more detail and then added a few extra shades of grey for variety. (another project I was working on, which I'll post a DA at some point was my own version of Megatron. I'm still working on Mega, but he certainly gave me practice for transformations when I came to make this)
Since it's a plasma-based weapon, the ammunition is fed via energy cells, so all I needed to do was have it feed from a larger energy cell for the launcher mode.
The extending mandibles in the front are supposed to focus the plasma via either a magnetic field or just re-energize it as the plasma leaves the main barrel. (whee, look at the technobabble. . . .)
that's cool work. but did u know u can submit gif images in 150x150 resolution and then animation files in swf format that will play right here without a need for download. DA used to allow that in all the categories. but stopped lately... this is a good example why they should bring that back in.
The weapon was sketched out -- I'm trying to remember the inspiration, probably something like the FMG's (Robocop2 has the only example I can recall off-hand) or the folding carbines by Kel-tec might have merged with the way the M-72 extends out plus crack or something.
The basic shape in compact mode was somewhat inspired by a Super Soaker I had.
There are a lot of themes that run through the stock gallery many people have similar ideas but they pull them off in different ways. In this series of newsletters we will look at similar ideas but different outcomes.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More

Seriously though, that's a nice smooth animation, it's easy to see how the weapon would work in real life
