C.R.O.W. Shotgun Model Hi-Res

Description

's been a while, eh?

Here's the CROW 12 (Close-Range Offensive Weapon). Not the most creative name, but I've seen gun names that made less sense. This is the super-hi-res version, better than the previous methods.

Well, the mod has since gone the way of so many before it. May it rest in peace. As such I think I can start posting the designs they were going for.

This was the first design that was approved over a year ago. The original design file is here.

It isn't the most realistic design I've ever made, but it is probably one of the more unique. This is why I think the lead liked it. One of the other designers owns a real-steel Garand, so the similar loading method may have been an influence. That chamber would never work in the real world, and god-knows how hard it would be to keep it clean.

Fellow artist and superior animator Dominic (aka. ~kapnmunch ) made an animation with the early version of the weapon.

The first change to the original design was the lead wanted an ammo count display, which is the screen behind the rear sight. The original model did feature stripper clips, but these were dropped when I came back to revamp the model. I just made more sense to have them loaded individually. Thus, the mag opening was changed (based on a .22 pistol mag). The socket in front of the internal mag is a place to mount accessories like a flashlight and . . . uh . . . maybe a laser?
The stock was slimmed down considerably for better ergonomics (The frame used to be as wide as the ammo display all the way around). Somewhat weird to be taking off virtual weight, but that increases model weight . . . .
I'm still not satisfied with the sights.

There are a few things technically missing in this model:
Lots of internals -- mag spring/plate, the loading mechanism, the gears and other mechanics related to the pump, the catch for the receiver to connect to the body.
Also missing might be some controls for the display.
However, I'm a bit tired with the model and wanted to move on.

Since the mod went down, I've spiffed it up so I can go on to bigger and better things. Call it a compulsion, but I like putting things in chronological order.

I don't happen to know how to make one, but the intent is to have a model to make a normal map.

The surface details were pretty much made-up as I went along, the screws/assembly pins were some of the last things added.

I used smooth proxy, as per usual when doing hi-res models.

Maya (originally in 6.5, has since gone through 7, and now 8). Default Lambert texture. Rendered with Mental Ray and Final Gather.

Fullview now goes to the 1024 pixel version. Download will give you the 2000 pixel
